The fluff behind the Plume!

Whats all the fluff about? Recently, we have been asked about the reason horses are decorated with plumes, so we dug into some history and here is what we found:Plumes have adorned horses for decades being most popular in the Victorian Era. They were added as decoration to the bridle and/or the saddle of the horse for all sorts of celebrations including weddings, coronations, and very often at funerals.According to Victorian funeral traditions: "a hearse and horses laden with ostrich plumes were indicative of a person’s wealth and often families hired extra horses and coaches festooned with plumes. In 1869, James H. Shanahan illustrated a variety of these ostrich plumes with removable tops in his Illustrated Catalogue of Undertakers Hardware and Trimmings. Poor people did not deserve plumes at all while two plumes meant that the deceased was of modest means while three to four meant that he or she was better off. If you could afford five or six plumes you were wealthy but having seven plumes was reserved for the truly rich."Ostrich Plumes are a sign of regal status. We found evidence that Napoleon Bonapartes' team of six horses were ornamented with white plumes for his coronation.Wind Chase Farm wants all of our clients to feel regal as well! Weather and event permitting our carriage horse(s) are beautifully adorned with ostrich plumes for Weddings, Birthday Celebrations, and Memorial services.  Its that extra service we put in our Gold Medal Services! When you want the best look no further! Our meticulously groomed horses and immaculately clean and polished carriages are sure to impress!

Baraat Horses for your Wedding Day

By definition: Baraat (Hindi: बरात) (Urdu: برات‎) is a groom's wedding procession in North India, West India and Pakistan. In North Indian communities, it is customary for the bridegroom to travel to the wedding venue (often the bride's house) on a mare, accompanied by his family members.BARAAT HISTORY AND INTRODUCTIONIn Hindu and Sikh weddings, the Groom is led to the marriage venue in a procession known as the Baraat. In Sikh Tradition, the Groom arrives wearing a sahara and saafa while carrying a kirpan. He is accompanied by family members, groomsmen, and friends known as baraatis.mayaBARAAT HORSEThe use of a Ghodi, or white female horse (mare), as transport for the Groom to the wedding venue is a common part of Indian tradition. Family members adorn the Ghodi with embellishments to match the groom as all eyes are on the two as they make their way through the procession. A modern take on the Baraat entrance is for the Groom to enter in an extravagant car or horse-drawn carriage decorated similarly to the traditionally ridden horse. However, in order to maintain traditions of the ceremony, Grooms sometimes choose to ride a horse to the end venue.
Wind Chase Farms Baraat horses are highly trained for the sounds of the Dhol Player as well as the dancing and celebrations of the baraatis. The modern Ghodi should also be well trained to accept Drones flying overhead as most videographers choose this method to record the celebration.img_5374 After the Groom reaches the venue, female relatives of the Bride’s family greet the Groom and his family. They apply tilak (sacred red color mixed with water) to his forehead and perform aarti to ward off evil eye. He then continues onward to the Milna Ceremony where he greets the Bride’s male relatives. BARAAT MUSICThe music during a Baraat sets the mood for the rest of the marriage event, with upbeat and exciting songs blasting as the Groom makes his way through the procession. Most DJ’s will have a portable soundimg_4661system as well as a Dhol player. Modern Indian weddings showcase a fusion of Hip Hop and Bhangra mixing in the resounding beats of the Dhol for excitement.  BRIDE DURING BARAATEver wonder what the bride is doing during all of this? Many times, the bride is secretly watching! The Bride is not included in the Baraat because it is solely to welcome the Groom and his family to the marriage site. She joins him for the Varmala, where they exchange garlands to signify the start of their marriage rituals.img_4504HIRING YOUR BARRAT HORSE IS SIMPLELike any type of wedding transportation, you don’t need to own a horse to have the perfect baraat. Ivory's Story

At Wind Chase Farm we do what we do for the love of the horse and the opportunity to share our passion for carriage driving! Every single day we give our horses and ponies buckets of love and attention, who would know there was room for one more.......In the late Spring we received a phone call from a friend who knew of a white Percheron horse that had been pulled from a dire situation. At the time, we were not looking for another horse but once we met her and looked into those big sweet eyes, we knew her destiny was to be with us!Taking in a rescue of this size (17.3hh tall) is a BIG commitment! We knew with proper nutrition, vet and farrier care, lots of grooming, and love we could make her feel better, give her a nice home, and maybe a little something to occupy her time. Below are just a few pictures we took along the way ......  From recovery to a new life here with our family at Wind Chase Farm. Introducing "Ivory"    Look for her in downtown Stuart, FL  and at some of our upcoming special events!
